One of the big attractions for sightseeing and bird watchers is the Formosa Wetlands Boardwalk. Voted one of the Top 10 Boardwalks in the state, this elevated boardwalk, constructed of recycled plastic, stretches for some 2,200 feet over coastal wetlands and a tidal exchange basin. From the Alcoa Bird Tower, an elevated gazebo along the walkway, you can watch the many birds, and animals that inhabit the area. Beautiful roseate spoonbills often perch along the walkway. From exotic birds to carnivorous plants, you never know what you might find under the boardwalk. Thanks to man-made boardwalks, you can experience wetlands firsthand without getting wet. Further up the road is a marina/store that has a back deck on the water. For a small fee, you can fish there 24 hours a day. There are restrooms, picnic tables, and some amazing fishing. You can bring your own cooler or purchase your beer, soda, food etc. in the store. (When it is open of course!) This place can be quiet busy even at 4 AM.
If you are in need of a bigger city, you can travel 28 miles inland to Victoria Texas. Here you will find quite an array of shopping, restaurants, and activities. Victoria has three full service hospitals and many small clinics. There is also a 562 acre park located along the Guadalupe River with a 27-hole public Golf Course, exercise trail, Zoo & numerous picnic and playground facilities. Victoria College & the University of Houston-Victoria provide higher education. This is a Great City with all the modern conveniences less than 30 miles away.
